There are many professional culinary courses that impart training to aspiring chefs. Some of them hone the student’s skills in the stream he wishes to specialize.

The professional culinary courses cover topics like:

  • Food preparation
  • Food science and microbiology
  • Restaurant business and management
  • Nutrition
  • Food preservation and storage
  • Cultural impact of food

These professional culinary courses teach skills necessary for a range of food service careers, including food preparation and restaurant management. Apart from chefs, graduates of these professional culinary courses can also work as food researchers, food wholesalers and food industry or catering managers. They have the option of starting their own business too.

In most institutes you have comprehensive professional culinary courses where you will

  • Learn about different cultures and their foods through history and language classes
  • Learn about marketing and promoting food, financial and food service management
  • Hone your leadership skills through leadership, ethics and psychology classes
  • Learn about professional food writing and food research
  • Get valuable experience at in-the-field learning opportunities
  • Get a chance to decide on your area of specialization like Wine and Beverage Hospitality, specific cuisines like Latin, Asian, Mediterranean or French, emerging techniques like Molecular Gastronomy etc.

There are various options available within the curriculum of the professional culinary course. You can select your options as per your area of interest. If you aim to become an Executive Chef apart from the classes in food production and food culture you must opt for classes in finance, business and restaurant management. If you dream of becoming a Pastry and Patisserie Chef then extensive classes in business management are unnecessary for your career, instead you must concentrate on hands-on pastry production classes.

At a culinary academy an aspiring hospitality professional can take classes in

  • Culinary Arts
  • Bakery and Pastry Production
  • Culinary Management
  • Hospitality Management
  • Restaurant Management

To succeed in this field you will also have to be competent in the following fields

  • Communication skills both verbal and written
  • Math and economics
  • Logic and deductive thinking

There are two specific courses that are very useful for working professionals and which gives them a chance to work with top chefs.

  • Michelin Starred Chef Course (300 Hours): this 300 hours specialized course can boost a professional chef’s career. The initial 75 hours of the course the students are trained in the development kitchen so that they can hone their skills. Thereafter they spend 225 hours working in the kitchen of a Michelin starred restaurant. This experience expands their knowledge, improves their skills and also their earning potential.
  • Professional Chef Course – Italian cuisine (325 hours): this 325 hour course is designed for those wishing to specialize in Italian cuisine. The initial 75 hours are spent in the development kitchen learning the basics of the trade and then the more advanced techniques. The following 250 hours the students spend in the kitchen of one of the partner Italian restaurants. Here they not only get exposure to real life work atmosphere, they are also taught to pay attention to nutrition, taste and food presentation. It provides a fabulous opportunity for the students to broaden their culinary imagination.
